Our Founder's Dream
Over 135 years of history
Our founder Don Andres Brugal was ambitious and adventurous, drawn to the Dominican Republic to realise his full potential. There he saw the potential to connect different parts of the rum-making process in his own unique way to unlock a new deeper, smoother rum with the power to bring people together. In 1888, Brugal was born and from that day forward, we have continued to bring out the best of our cask aged Dominican rum.
1868
Andres Brugal voyages across the world to Cuba from his birthplace in Sitges Spain, fueled by his desire to seek new opportunities and possibilities
1888
Brugal & Co. was founded by
Don Andrés Brugal Montaner.
1897
Don Andres departs Cuba and settles in Puerto Plata, drawn to the wonder of the island of the Dominican Republic
1919
Brugal creates the “ Ligero and limpio ” purest spirit, the first Dominican rum to not add Aguardiente
1920
Brugal crafts its first golden aged rum, beginning our 100 year legacy of cask aging expertise
1940
Our iconic net is applied for the first time as a beautiful layer to protect Brugal’s prized liquid added by 2nd generation inspired after an international expedition
1976
Signature expression Extra Viejo is created by Brugal's third generation as they continue to explore White American Oak aged rum
1988
Created premium rum Brugal Siglo de Oro
as a celebration of its
100th anniversary.
2008
Brugal & Co. announces its association with leading Scotch Malt Whisky producer Edrington, and the companies embark on a new chapter together, sharing their passion for quality spirits and the very finest casks
2010
Brugal 1888 is created and launched. The very first Dominican rum double aged in American and Spanish Oak casks.
2013
Papa Andres, the most exclusive and valuable Brugal reserve, is made available to public for
the first time and is awarded World’s Best Super Premium Rum
2021
Brugal 1888 is awarded a Gold Medal and Brugal is awarded Dominican Republic Rum Distillery of the Year at the prestigious New York International Spirits Competition
